TrueFaced

It’s that time of year where I’m looking at material that might be used for study in our community this fall.  I am most impressed with a book/study guide/DVD called TrueFaced.  It seeks to move us from pleasing God to trusting God (which pleased God greatly!)  A recommended read.  You can find the website here.

Extraordinary Ordination

Although I find church politics disheartening (seldom does political posturing lead us to the foot of the cross), I think it’s important to continue reporting on some significant developments in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.  Despite the threat of discipline from the Eastern Bishop, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Newmarket went against church policy and [...]

Evangelical Lutheran Church Controversies…continued

The ELCIC is facing further challenges this weekend.  Holy Cross Lutheran Churchin Newmarket, Ontario is about to ordain a gay pastor.  This goes against church policy and the Bishops have denounced it, the Eastern Synod Bishop did so in this letter, and our Alberta Synod Bishop did so here.  The odd thing is that both [...]

An Evangelical Manifesto

John Stackhouse recently brought the Evangelical Manifesto to my attention.  It is a 20 page declaration of faith and a definition of Evangelicalism.  I think it is a helpful document and commend all those who worked to create it.  Now let’s hope that its insight will permeate into those places where it may be useful.

Wendell Berry Manifesto

Yesterday I started reading Wendell Berry.  His agrarian world seems almost like fiction to a office man like me – with a hatch-back parked out front and a Safeway card in my pocket.  Yet his words seem to bring comfort and hope.  I’m reading “Fidelity: Five Stories by Wendell Berry” and “Two More Stories of the [...]

Junk Peter Popoff Sent Me: Part 2

We continue on in our look at miracle-money-making-trinkets that have been sent to me by the Rev. Peter Popoff over the years.  You can read the part 1 here – giving some background about my interest in Peter Popoff’s antics.  For now, let’s get right into it.  What miracle oddities do we have this week?  [...]

Student Ministries – Car Wars

Our Student Ministry group had fun Saturday painting up my brother-in-law’s old car.  It will be donated to the Kidney Foundation, but not before being filled with blankets for the Animal Rescue Foundation.  We painted St. Francis of Assisi on the front (the patron saint of animals, birds, and the environment).  Check out The Keystone [...]

JI Packer Interview

During my time at Regent College, I never took a class with Dr. Packer, but he was a guest lecturer in my classes and I enjoyed sitting at the table with him.  He is brilliant and very much deserves to be one of Time’s Magazines most influential evangelicals.  I have been following the recent events [...]

Junk Peter Popoff Sent Me: Part 1

A humorous look at the infamous Peter Popoff’s mailings to me over the years (and i’ll let Peter tell the jokes…)

For too long now I’ve been receiving junk in the mail from the Rev. Peter Popoff. He’s a faith-healer-money-maker who is as entertaining as he is saddening. I am always amazed at the kind of [...]
